Be Prepared for The Busiest Holiday Season On The Roadway

It’s time! Time for the busy holiday travel season. And this year, during the holiday season, AAA is forecasting that more than one-third of Americans will be traveling. More incredible, those traveling represent a 4.4 percent increase over last year. That’s the largest increase since AAA has been tracking holiday travel, which started back in 2001. But with the added number of Americans on the road, that means that for the more than 102 million people who will pack up their cars for a holiday road trip this year, it is also estimated that travel times in the most congested cities could increase as much as four times than a normal trip would take. Yikes!

Once again, the majority of those people traveling this year will be doing so by vehicle and more American will be driving than ever before. It is expected that most drivers will experience the greatest amount of congestion prior to the actual holiday week with the holiday rush starting on Wednesday, December 19, as both regular commuters and holiday travelers mix on the roadways. The worst day to travel though will be on Thursday, December 20. If you are driving this year, make sure you leave bright and early, or if you can, hit the roads after the typical commute times.

So what’s causing this increase in the number of people driving out there? Plain and simple….it’s gas pricing. This year, gas has been relatively inexpensive, and as the holiday season has approached, gas prices have dropped to the cheapest they’ve been this year. Combine this with a higher disposable income and that means more of us will be hitting the roads to see our friends and family.

And guess what? Many of these drivers are headed down here to the Sunshine State. Matter fact, 3 of the top ten year end travel destinations are in this state. (Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, and Miami).

So, if you’re going to be one of those who will be hitting the roads this holiday season, remember to pack your patience, make sure you’re ready with the tunes or favorite podcasts, have car snacks, and make sure your car is ready for the drive.
