2018 Mercedes-Benz Metris Coolant in Tampa, FL

These signs can indicate depleted coolant or a leak, so adding fluid alone may not resolve the cause. The cooling system is under pressure and hot after running; checking it should be done cold. A service visit can test the system and inspect the components involved.

• Temperature gauge running higher than usual
• Sweet smell or a puddle under the front of the vehicle
• Rusty, cloudy, or low coolant in the reservoir

The refill uses the coolant type and concentration the manufacturer specifies for this vehicle. Pressure testing helps distinguish a routine coolant service from a leak that needs repair. The inspection also looks beyond the reservoir so the system's condition can be assessed as a whole.

• Drain and refill with manufacturer-specified coolant
• Cooling-system pressure test
• Inspection of hoses, cap, radiator, and water pump area

There is no universal replacement timing that applies to every vehicle or operating condition. Coolant condition can also be tested during a service visit between scheduled points. That testing helps determine whether the fluid's protective additives remain suitable and whether the system has a leak or another condition requiring attention.

• Follow the manufacturer's maintenance schedule
• Test coolant condition during service visits
• Investigate any leak or warning sign promptly

Coolants are not interchangeable, even when two products appear similar. Colour is not a reliable guide to what is in the bottle or whether it is suitable for the system. Mercedes-Benz of Tampa can perform the service using the manufacturer's specified coolant type and concentration.

• Use the manufacturer-specified coolant type
• Do not select coolant by colour alone
• Have the system checked if the fluid is uncertain

A level that keeps dropping points to a leak rather than normal consumption. The cooling system is under pressure and hot after running, so checking it should be done cold. If the level is low or repeatedly falls, book an inspection so the condition of the coolant and the system's pressure can be tested.

• Adding coolant restores level only
• Repeated level loss indicates a possible leak
• Check the system cold, not immediately after driving
